Thinkprogress has a nice timeline on how the "ClimateGate" faux-scandal was manufactured, and how the climate science community essentially got Swiftboated.
Proving, once again, that truth is entirely irrelevant if your lie is convenient enough. And if there's enough money in it.
(Though, naturally, there is no possible way that these hackers were bought-and-paid-for. Hackers don't do that, and certainly nobody would even think of hiring them if they did.)
